Before we get into what shipped, one thing worth a coffee break of your time: we published a fresh How to Use Surfer walkthrough — one workflow that takes a page from "not ranking, not cited" to optimized for both Google and AI answers. If you're newer to Surfer, or you've only ever used one corner of it, start there. It's the fastest way to see how the pieces below fit together.

Now, the updates.

There are two new things to vastly improve your daily Surfer experience and one crucial reminder, but if there’s one thing I want you to take from this month’s updates, it would be this:

You can now use the full power of Surfer — GEO, SEO, writing, clustering, AI search analytics, the whole shebang! — inside any AI agent.

Yes, Surfer MCP Beta is live — and ready for your feedback!

Let’s dive in.

Surfer MCP is here (Beta)

Last month we shipped the biggest API update in Surfer's history — and I told you it was the foundation for something bigger. This is the first piece of it.

The short version: you can now plug Surfer into any AI agent that speaks MCP — Claude, ChatGPT, and the rest — and let it plan, write, score, and optimize content with live Surfer data. No more shuttling context between tabs. The agent works with your real SEO and AI Search signals, your guidelines, your AI Tracker data, and your brand knowledge, so what it produces makes actual optimization calls — and still sounds like you.

Here's why it matters beyond convenience: the way people make content is shifting from "open a tool" to "ask an agent." An agent that can reach Surfer's data makes real optimization decisions, not generic ones. That's the difference between content an AI wrote and content an AI wrote well.

As you can probably guess, this is also a step toward our own Surfer Agent — a reality where you can outsource your AI SEO work to us and see compounding results while you focus on more creative things.

Surfer MCP is in Beta and rolling out gradually to Pro, Peace of Mind, and Enterprise. Tell us what to build next, or ask for early access, at annajagiello@surferseo.com.

Recommendations now include your AI Tracker insights

If you've ever stared at your AI Tracker data and thought "okay, but what do I actually do first" — this one's for you.

Your Surfer Recommendations used to stop at your content. Now they read your AI Tracker signals too — and turn them into a ranked to-do list: the mentions worth earning first, the sentiment to fix before it colors how buyers see you, and the topics to cover to become the source AI cites.

AI visibility isn't one problem, it's three — get mentioned, get mentioned well, and become the source. Most tools show you the raw data and stop there. We close that gap: you open Recommendations and already know the next move, ranked by impact.

Less staring at dashboards, more knowing your next move and actually doing it.

A reminder: one score for AI SEO (SEO + GEO)

Worth resurfacing this month, because the research below makes it land harder. Your Content Score already grades ranking and citation odds of your pages in one split bar — SEO entities on one side, your intro (new guideline set called Intent Alignment) and facts on the other — and one Auto-Optimize click fixes both.

Reopen anything you optimized before it shipped; the new Intent Alignment guidelines can make any page almost 40% more likely to be cited.

The research behind all of it

We don't build these features on vibes. This month we published a run of studies scoring 650,000+ real AI answers against a 20-factor rubric, plus 100,000 citation placements across 10,000 AI Overviews — and they all point at the same spot on your page.

  • Your first 100 words decide most of it. 38% of all AI citations come from the first 100 words of a page — nearly double what it was a year ago. AI models treat your article like a taxi meter: the further they travel before finding something citable, the more expensive you are as a source, and a cheaper option wins. Read the study.
  • AI Overviews: you still have to rank. 80% of AI Overviews citations come from pages already in the top 3 organic results, and only 3–4 sources get cited per query. Ranking gets you shortlisted; your first paragraph gets you cited. Read the study.
  • ChatGPT changed the most. Dense sourcing was its #1 factor a year ago; now it's collapsed, and the first paragraph leads instead. A new factor — Semantic Triplets, clean extractable statements — debuted high. Read the study.
  • AI Mode is the pickiest — and rewards good content most. Its top factor (Search Intent Alignment, 29.6%) is the highest value any factor reaches for any model, and it's the one place first-hand experience measurably earns citations. Read the study.
  • Perplexity citations compound. Its top three factors are all your first paragraph — and once you earn a Perplexity citation, you tend to keep it, while ChatGPT and AI Mode churn over time. Read the study.

The through-line: across every model, your introduction is what gets you cited. Which is exactly what Intent Alignment, the unified score, and Auto-Optimize are built to fix.

Where this is going

If you missed the bigger news: we joined the Positive portfolio and launched Positive Surfer, the AI Visibility Platform — one workflow for Google rankings and AI citations together. Everything above is part of that.

And we're not slowing down. Very soon, Surfer won't just tell you what to fix — it'll do the work with you and even for you: agentic workflows, MCP integration, Surfer embedded directly into key marketing tools and workflows — from CRMs to marketing automation, social media, and more.

The MCP release you saw this month is the foundation for all of it. No dates yet, but it's actively in progress.

Already with us? Open your Content Editor, run Auto-Optimize on a page you published before this month, and see the AI Search half of your score move up. Then tell us how it went — the feedback shapes what ships next.

Not a Surfer yet? Now's a great time. We recently launched a free 7-day trial with full access to Pro — everything you need to audit and fix your visibility across Google, AI search, and beyond. Start free.

See you next month.
