Perplexity built its whole product around sources. Every answer comes with numbered links. So we pulled every Perplexity citation from Surfer AI Search Analytics between September 1 and 28, 2026. That came to about 10.37 million citations.

Reddit alone earned 18.9% of the citations that went to the top 50 domains, 2.86x as many as LinkedIn in second place. Four stats aggregator sites also made the list, with 6.9% of top-50 citations among them.

Let's see what Perplexity cites in more detail.

Data: Surfer AI Search Analytics, September 1 to 28, 2026. "% of all Perplexity citations" is the domain's share of about 10.37 million Perplexity citations. "% of top-50 citations" is its share of the 932,325 citations that went to these 50 domains.

Here's what the table tells us:

  • Reddit is king, once again. Its 176,005 citations are 18.9% of the top 50, more than LinkedIn, Clutch, and blog.hubspot.com (#2 to #4) combined. About 1 in every 59 Perplexity citations goes to Reddit.
  • The top 10 take almost half. Together they earn 48.1% of top-50 citations! The top 3 alone take 30.4%.
  • Review and directory sites take 21.6%. That's Clutch, G2, Yelp, Capterra, Tripadvisor, Expertise.com, and more. Perplexity pulls from directories of different kinds and topics.
  • Stats aggregators take 6.9%. worldmetrics.org, gitnux.org, wifitalents.com, and zipdo.co.
  • The top 50 are only 9.0% of the picture. The other 91.0% of Perplexity citations go to domains outside this list.
  • Marketing and SEO domains take 11.7%, six Polish domains take 8.2%. We attribute this bias to our data source, which is Surfer users. But it still shows the relevance or niche-specific and local domains to rank.

How did we collect the data?

All data in this study comes from Surfer AI Search Analytics.

Between September 1 and 28, 2026, we tracked 57,327 prompts and collected 978,402 answers for Perplexity. That came to about 10.37 million citations.

We scrape what real users see in Perplexity, not API responses. That matters, because there’s a huge difference between API-based vs. scraped responses (the overlap is only about 30%).

A few notes on the numbers:

  • "% of all Perplexity citations" is each domain's share of every Perplexity citation in our data.
  • "% of top-50 citations" is each domain's share of the 932,325 citations that went to the 50 domains in the table.
  • Subdomains count separately. blog.hubspot.com, learn.g2.com, and agencies.semrush.com each have their own row, so a brand's full footprint can be bigger than one row shows.

What this data means for you

Of all the AI products we track, Perplexity is the one built most openly around its sources. It shows them up front, right next to the claims they back up.

So earning citations matters even more here. And judging by the table, Perplexity likes community-driven sites, directories, and stat aggregators. Yeah, content marketers, that’s right: time to stop looking down on those same quote-collecting sites you’ve never used in your articles for integrity reasons.

Reddit is Perplexity's favorite source by far

And by far, we mean FAR. Reddit earned 176,005 citations, 2.86x as many as LinkedIn and 8.55x as many as YouTube.

This suggests Perplexity values real expertise. LinkedIn at #2 (61,623 citations) fits the same pattern, because that’s where people post takeaways based on their own work.

  • Try to show up in real Reddit threads. If you have the resources to spare (and know how tough a game Reddit can be with strict mods), answer questions in your niche's subreddits as a person, not a brand.
  • Get your team posting on LinkedIn. Useful posts from real people at your company give Perplexity something to cite that isn't your landing page.

Perplexity loves a stat page

Four stats aggregator sites (worldmetrics.org, gitnux.org, wifitalents.com, and zipdo.co) earned 64,004 citations between them. worldmetrics.org alone made the top 10.

That makes sense for an answer engine that backs up every claim with a link. When the answer needs a number, a page with a list of dated numbers is easy to quote.

Still, the numbers Perplexity cites often started elsewhere. So if you publish original data, highlight the key numbers with plain, quotable sentences. Then you're the source the aggregators cite, and you have a shot at the citation yourself.

Review sites and directories decide who gets recommended

Review and directory sites took 21.6% of the top 50's citations. They cover B2B (Clutch, G2, Capterra, DesignRush), local services (Yelp, Thumbtack, Houzz, BBB), travel (Tripadvisor), and even lawyers (Justia, Super Lawyers).

When someone asks for "the best agency for X" or "a good plumber near me," Perplexity wants a list of options with ratings. Directories are built to give it exactly that.

Keep your profiles on the review sites and directories that matter in your category complete and up to date, and keep asking happy customers for reviews (so Perplexity has something recent to say about you).

The top 50 is an average, so always check your own niche

The top 50 domains earned only 9.0% of Perplexity's citations. The other 91.0% went to sites outside this table.

Plus, you can see that a big chunk of data is taken by marketing and SEO-related sites, as well as Polish domains.

That’s because the data comes from sources users, many of whom operate in this niche and location. While they may not be the right inspiration for citation-seeking for you, it’s still a useful signal. Your industry, your region, and your language change which sources matter. For your prompts, the most-cited source might be a trade publication, a local directory, or an industry blog that never makes a global top 50. And getting a mention there may be a lot easier than earning upvotes on Reddit.

Find the most-cited sources for your prompts

Perplexity isn't a niche tool anymore. Back in May 2025, CEO Aravind Srinivas said it handled about 780 million queries a month, growing 20% month over month.

And those people see your sources. The numbered links are right inside the answer, next to the sentence they back up. As our Perplexity visibility data study puts it, citations are the product.

In the same study, we also found that Perplexity cites the same sources more consistently than other AI models. A citation you earn now tends to stick—so go get those mentions!

But the sources Perplexity trusts for your niche may not be the ones shown in the table. They depend on your industry, your region, and the exact questions your buyers ask.

So before you spend this quarter on Reddit replies or review campaigns, check which sources actually show up for your prompts.

That's what Surfer AI Search Analytics is for.

Add your prompts, and open the Source dashboard.

Surfer AI Search Analytics Sources dashboard

There, you can filter by LLM to see Perplexity only (or other top LLMs). Group by domain to get a list just like the one in this article, built from your own prompts. And find your outreach targets: the Mentioned column shows whether each source already names your brand. The ones that don't are your outreach list.

You might find that the source Perplexity cites most for your prompts is one you've never heard of. Better to know that now than after Q4.
