Between September 1 and 28, 2026, we counted about 5.73 million ChatGPT citations in Surfer AI Search Analytics. The 50 most-cited domains earned only 8.4% of them.

Reddit came first, but with just 0.74% of all citations. Review portals like Clutch and G2 were stepping on its toes, followed by marketing, government, and documentation sites.

Conclusion? ChatGPT likes to cite authoritative sources, but it doesn’t stop at big domains. Niche-specific sources have their shot, too.

Let's dig deeper.

The 50 most-cited domains in ChatGPT

Here's the full list of domains ChatGPT cited most frequently in September 2026, based on data from all Surfer users.

For each domain, you'll see its citation count, its share of the top 50 citations, and its share of every ChatGPT citation we counted.

Data: Surfer AI Search Analytics, September 1 to 28, 2026. "% of all ChatGPT citations" is the domain's share of about 5.73 million ChatGPT citations. "% of top-50 citations" is its share of the 483,090 citations that went to these 50 domains.

Here's what the table tells us:

  • No page dominates the ranking. Reddit is #1, and it still gets only 8.8% of the top 50's citations (0.74% of all ChatGPT citations). The top 10 together take 39.7%.
  • Review and directory sites take 23.6%. Clutch and G2 take spots 2 and 3, respectively.
  • Government and health research sites take 10.1%. These are gov.uk, fda.gov, gov.pl, irs.gov, PubMed, and PMC.
  • Developer and help docs take 8.0%. These are Google's developer and support sites, plus Microsoft Learn.
  • The top 50 are only 8.4% of the picture. The other 91.6% of ChatGPT citations go to domains outside this list.
  • Marketing and SEO domains take 14.6%. Semrush and Ahrefs alone take 7.9%.

How we collected the data

All data in this study comes from Surfer AI Search Analytics.

Between September 1 and 28, 2026, we tracked 1,229,618 prompts and collected 47,213 answers for ChatGPT. That came to about 5.73 million citations.

We scrape what real users see in ChatGPT, not API responses. Check out our data study on API vs. scraping to see why that matters (and just how small the overlap is).

A few notes on the numbers:

  • "% of all ChatGPT citations" is each domain's share of every ChatGPT citation in our data.
  • "% of top-50 citations" is each domain's share of the 483,090 citations that went to the 50 domains in the table.
  • Subdomains count separately. blog.hubspot.com, learn.g2.com, and support.google.com each have their own row, so a brand's full footprint can be bigger than one row shows.
  • The prompts come from Surfer users, which is why marketing, SaaS, and a few Polish domains show up more than they might in a general sample.

What does this mean for you and your ChatGPT optimization?

ChatGPT leans on two kinds of sources: places where people exchange honest opinions and places people go to for foolproof fact-checking. That mix of community and authority-based sources shows that ChatGPT values solidly backed data and personal experience.

Still, for you, the biggest takeaway should be that 91.6% of citations go elsewhere.

Community and reviews come first, so get your brand talked about

Reddit earned 42,623 citations, 1.65x as many as Clutch in second place. And review and directory sites took almost a quarter of the top 50's citations.

That makes sense. When someone asks ChatGPT "what's the best CRM for a small agency?", the algorithms assume honest opinions hold more credibility than a company’s listicle.

  • Keep your review profiles alive. Ask happy customers for reviews on the G2, Capterra, Clutch, or Trustpilot pages that matter in your category (so the most-cited review sites have something recent to say about you). It always pays off to get some social proof, anyway.
  • Try showing up in real Reddit threads. Answer questions in your niche's subreddits that are related to your top prompts. Reddit is a difficult game to win since it’s heavily moderated, by if you have resources to try, it’s worth a shot—it’s a trusted source for other LLMs, too.

Government sites and docs win the "just the facts" questions

Government-owned sites took 10.1% of the top 50. Google's and Microsoft's documentation sites added another 8.0%.

When a question has one correct answer, ChatGPT goes to the source that definitely gets it right.

So if you write about regulated topics, link to and quote the official source. And if you have docs published on your site, optimize them for LLMs! Make sure they’re clear, up-to-date, and answer the question in the first paragraph before elaborating.

The top 50 is an average, so check your own niche

Remember: 91.6% of ChatGPT citations go to domains outside this table.

Look at gov.pl, allegro.pl, and ceneo.pl. Three Polish domains made the top 50 because many Surfer users operate in the Polish market. Marketing and SEO domains made up 14.6% of the top 50 citations because many Surfer users work in this niche.

That’s a very useful signal. Your industry, region, and language change which sources matter. The most relevant sources for your niche may not be on this list at all.

Plus, brands that publish a lot of helpful, practical content (think HubSpot's blog, or Ahrefs' and Semrush's guides) get cited on their own merit. Your own site can be the source.

How to rank in ChatGPT? Find the most-cited sources for your prompts

In June 2026, ChatGPT hit a billion monthly app users. So appearing in ChatGPT answers isn't optional anymore if you still want to make sales. And we assume you do.

When ChatGPT answers one of those questions, it pulls from a set of sources. If your site (or a site that mentions you) is one of them, you're part of the answer. If not, the mention goes to your competitor.

But while the table above is a good benchmark, it still shows only 8.4% of the full picture. Your industry, your region, and the exact questions your buyers ask all change which domains ChatGPT trusts. So before you spend three working days planning your new campaign to dominate Reddit only to get shut down by mods, check which sources actually show up for your prompts.

That's what Surfer AI Search Analytics is for.

Just add the prompts you care about, and check the Sources dashboard. It shows every domain and URL cited in the answers to your prompts.

Then:

  • Filter by LLM. Use the AI models filter to see ChatGPT only. Or switch to Perplexity, Gemini, AI Mode, or AI Overviews (so you can see how different each model's favorite sources are).
  • Group by domain. Toggle Group by domain to get a list just like the one in this article, built from your own prompts.
  • Find your outreach targets. The Mentioned column shows whether each source already mentions your brand. The ones that don't are your outreach list.

You might find that the source ChatGPT cites most for your prompts are ones you never saw in this table—and may be easier to reach out to. That’s handy to know before Q4 is in full swing and you still have some time to build your AI visibility before the year is over.
