Google says AI Mode passed 1 billion monthly users within a year of launch. So the sites it cites get seen by a lot of people.

To find out which sites those are, we counted every domain AI Mode cited in Surfer AI Search Analytics between September 1 and 28, 2026. That's roughly 4.79 million citations.

The main takeaway is, Google mostly cites Google. google.com alone earned 45.1% of the citations that went to the top 50 domains. Google-owned sites (google.com, YouTube, and Google Play) earned 67.8%.

Then social platforms—Reddit, Facebook, and LinkedIn—complete the top 5, leaving just 18.4% for the other 45 domains.

Here's the full picture.

The 50 most-cited domains in Google AI Mode

Below are the 50 domains AI Mode cited most in September 2026. The data comes from the prompts that all Surfer AI Search Analytics users track.

Every row shows how many citations the domain earned, its share of the top 50's citations, and its share of all AI Mode citations we recorded.

Here's what stands out in the table:

  • Total google.com domination. Its 661,944 citations are about 1 in every 7 AI Mode citations overall. That's 2.04x YouTube in second place, and about twice as many as ranks 4 to 50 earned together!
  • Three domains cover 77.6%. google.com, YouTube, and Reddit. The other 47 domains in the top 50 split the remaining 22.4%.
  • Google-owned sites have 67.8%. That's google.com, YouTube, and Google Play (#14).
  • Social and community platforms earn 16.0%. Reddit, Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram, Quora, and Medium. Reddit wins, with 4.58x as many citations as Facebook.
  • Local review and booking platforms hold 4.4%, and B2B review and analyst sites hold 2.7%. That’s a lot of attention paid to opinions based on personal experience and expertise.
  • The top 50 cover only 30.6% of AI Mode citations. The other 69.4% go to sites outside this table.

Where does this data come from?

All the data in this study comes from Surfer AI Search Analytics.

Between September 1 and 28, 2026, Surfer users tracked 57,595 prompts, and we collected 1,206,455 answers for AI Mode. That added up to roughly 4.79 million citations.

We record answers the way a real person sees them in the AI Mode interface, without relying on the commercial API. That's important, because API results and scraped answers can be very different.

A few notes on reading the numbers:

  • "% of top-50 citations" is each domain's share of the 1,466,498 citations earned by all 50 domains in the table.
  • "% of all AI Mode citations" compares each domain to every AI Mode citation in our data.
  • The total is calculated. We got the 4.79 million figure by dividing each domain's citation count by its share of all citations. All 50 rows point to the same total, within 0.1%.
  • Subdomains get their own rows. m.yelp.com, play.google.com, request.angi.com, and agencies.semrush.com are listed separately, so one brand can be spread across several rows.

What does the AI Mode data mean for your visibility strategy?

AI Mode keeps most of its citations close to home.

Google's own properties take two-thirds of the top 50's citations, and social platforms take another 16.0%. So any strategy to earn AI Mode citations should start with Google itself: strong rankings, presence on Google pages, and videos on YouTube.

After that come the social media and review sites, so all the places where people share their opinions.

However, the top 50 cover only 30.6% of citations; the sources that matter most for your prompts might not be on this list at all.

Keep strong visibility on Google

google.com earned 661,944 citations, and YouTube added another 324,246.

Note that google.com is a single row in our data, and lots of different Google pages live on that domain (Search, Maps, Business Profiles, help pages, and more). Domain-level data can't tell us which ones AI Mode links to most.

AI Mode is also built on top of Google Search. Google says it uses a query fan-out technique, "breaking down your question into subtopics and issuing a multitude of queries simultaneously on your behalf." (Fan-out queries are the smaller searches AI runs behind one prompt.)

What that means for your Google strategy is:

  • Keep your SEO in shape. If AI Mode searches Google behind the scenes, pages that rank for those smaller searches are the ones it has to choose from.
  • Keep your Google Business Profile complete if you serve local customers. Add your services, hours, and photos, and keep the reviews coming (so Google has fresh, accurate facts about you).
  • Put your best answers on YouTube. YouTube earned 22.1% of top-50 citations, 2.14x as many as Reddit. Take the questions your blog already answers well and turn them into short videos. Say the question in the first few seconds, and repeat the answer in the description and chapter titles.

Get your social media platforms in check

Reddit is the biggest of them by far: 151,749 citations, or 10.3% of the top 50. Facebook (#4) and LinkedIn (#5) come next, then Instagram (#11), Quora (#13), and Medium (#24).

Reddit's spot is no big surprise. Google has had access to Reddit's content for its AI since 2024, under a deal CBS News reported at about $60 million a year.

What's more interesting is Facebook. It out-cites LinkedIn, Instagram, and every review site on the list. Add Instagram, and Meta's two platforms earn 43,681 citations (3.0% of the top 50).

  • Join Reddit threads (as a person, not a brand). Answer questions in your niche's subreddits with real experience. Still, remember Reddit is a tough game, with demanding mods and users.
  • Let your experts post on LinkedIn. Don’t turn every opinion into a blog post; instead, have your company’s top voices share insights on LinkedIn more often.
  • Treat your Facebook page as a listing. If it applies to your business, keep your services, hours, and contact details current, and post clear answers to the questions customers ask most.

AI Mode likes reviews

Review and booking platforms for B2B or local services amount to 7.1% of mention share.

Take care of your social proof. Claim your profile on relevant platforms and ensure a steady flow of reviews.

Brand sites still earn citations with their own content

Zapier is #6 with 15,450 citations. That's more than Instagram, G2, or Forbes, and Zapier isn't a forum or a review site.

Seven more brand sites made the list: Salesforce, Figma, Webflow, Shopify, GitHub, Guideflow, and Signitic. Together, these 8 brand sites hold 2.9% of the top 50's citations. They earned that with their own help docs, guides, and templates.

Why this ensemble of sites? The prompts behind this study are tracked by Surfer customers, and plenty of them sell marketing, SEO, or SaaS products.

This proves a brand's own pages can earn AI Mode citations when they answer the question better than anyone else.

The top 50 is an average, so check the sources in your niche

The top 50 domains earned just 30.6% of AI Mode's citations. The other 69.4% went to sites you won't find in this table.

As mentioned above, marketing pages, as well as local pages, earn a significant spot in the top 50 list. While they may not be the best sources for you, they show an important lesson: your own top sources will depend on your industry, your country, and the language your buyers search in.

AI Mode cares about content quality

For AI Mode, quality matters. In our study of how AI Mode picks its sources, we found it cares most about experience and quality signals among the leading LLMs. The high presence of opinion-led domains in this dataset confirms that.

  • Answer the question in the first paragraph. Repeat the question in your own words, then answer it, before any background or story.
  • Show first-hand experience. Your own tests, screenshots, and numbers from real work tell AI Mode a person who has done the thing wrote the page.

Track the domains AI Mode cites for your own prompts

This study is a benchmark built from many thousands of prompts across many industries. Your prompts are a much smaller and more specific set, and the domains AI Mode trusts for them can look nothing like this table.

So before you spend a quarter on YouTube videos or Reddit threads, check which domains get cited for the exact prompts your buyers use, model by model. That way, you work on the sources that move your visibility.

You could run your top buyer questions in AI Mode by hand and write down the sources. But AI Mode answers change often, and repeating that for dozens of prompts every week gets old fast.

That's what Surfer AI Search Analytics is for. Add the prompts you care about, and it will show you your own personal list of 50 domains.

Go to the Sources dashboard.

Surfer AI Search Analytics Sources dashboard

There, you can filter the prompts by LLM (for example, AI mode). Switch on Group by domain, and you'll get your own version of the table above, based only on the prompts you track.

Then, spot the gaps. Check the Mentioned column to see which cited sources already talk about your brand. Every source that doesn't should go to the top of your outreach list.

Chances are, a site or two near the top of your list will be one that never makes a global ranking like this one. And that's a site your competitors may not have found yet.
