Gemini is Google's own AI assistant, and close to a billion people use it every month.
To see which sources it likes the most, we pulled every Gemini citation from Surfer AI Search Analytics between September 1 and 28. That added up to about 3.83 million citations.
Reddit alone earned 25.0% of the citations that went to Gemini's top 50 domains, 4.23x as many as Zapier in second place. Review and comparison sites (Clutch, Gartner, G2, PCMag, and friends) took another 20.1%.
So, Gemini likes opinion-driven content. But the good news is: other types of sources make the cut as well. And there’s still room for your own site in there.
Let's dig deeper.
The 50 most-cited domains in Gemini
Here's the full list of domains Gemini cited most often in September 2026, based on data from all Surfer AI Search Analytics users.
For each domain, you'll see how many citations it earned, its share of the top 50 citations, and its share of every Gemini citation we counted.
So, what does the table tell us?
- Reddit wins. Its 68,033 citations are 25.0% of the top 50, which is 1.72x Zapier, YouTube, and Clutch (#2 to #4) put together. Roughly 1 in every 56 Gemini citations points to Reddit.
- The top 10 earn more than half. Together they take 54.0% of top-50 citations, and the top 3 alone take 35.5%.
- Review and comparison sites take 20.1%. That's 12 domains.
- The top 50 are just 7.1% of all Gemini citations. The other 92.9% go to domains outside this list.
How did we collect the data?
All the data in this study comes from Surfer AI Search Analytics.
Between September 1 and 28, 2026, we tracked 57,069 prompts and collected 1,196,660 answers for Gemini. That gave us about 3.83 million citations.
We collect what real users see in the Gemini interface, not what the API returns. That matters because scraped answers and API-based results differ (by a lot. The overlap is just 30% at best. Check out our data study on the topic).
A few notes on reading the numbers:
- "% of all Gemini citations" is each domain's share of every Gemini citation in our data.
- "% of top-50 citations" is each domain's share of the 271,683 citations that went to the 50 domains in the table.
- Subdomains count separately. learn.g2.com, play.google.com, and attorneys.superlawyers.com each get their own row, so a brand's full footprint can be bigger than one row shows. G2's two rows add up to 8,842 citations, for example, which would put it at #6.
What this means for you (and your outreach list)
Three kinds of sources stand out: sites where people exchange opinions, places where people compare and rate things, and a long tail of local and niche sites.
That last group proves an important point: the top sources depend on the prompt. Always check for your industry and geographic location.
Reddit is Gemini's favorite source by far
Reddit earned 68,033 Gemini citations, leaving all competition in the dust.
Part of it is definitely the relationship between the two companies. In February 2024, Google reportedly signed a deal with Reddit worth around $60 million a year.
What does that mean for your brand? A good chunk of what Gemini says about you may come from strangers on Reddit. So:
- Join the threads where your buyers already ask questions. Answer as a person with real experience, not as a brand account. Mods (and users) can spot a sales pitch instantly.
- Check what's already being said. Search Reddit for your brand and your top competitors. If the top threads are outdated or negative, Gemini can pick up that story. You can try to turn your luck around by participating in those threads.
Review and comparison sites decide who makes the shortlist
Review and comparison sites took 20.1% of the top 50 citations. These are mostly B2B software and agencies. Clutch (#4) and Gartner (#5) both made the top 5.
It makes sense. When someone asks Gemini for "the best CRM for a small team" or "a good lawyer in Chicago," it wants a ready-made list with ratings. Review and directory sites are built to hand it exactly that.
Find the two or three review sites that matter in your category and keep your profiles complete and current. Then keep asking happy customers for reviews, so Gemini always has something recent to quote.
The top 50 is an average, so always check your own niche
The top 50 domains earned only 7.1% of all Gemini citations. The other 92.9% went to sites outside this table.
So for the prompts you care about, the most-cited source might be different from the table above.
And the data proves it. Nine Polish domains accounted for 11.1% of the top 50 citations, and marketing and SEO domains accounted for 16.8%. That’s because the numbers come from Surfer users, a lot of whom work in these industries and locations.
While these sites may not be the best for your outreach list, their presence signals that your region, your language, and your industry change which sources Gemini trusts.
Who knows, maybe for your prompts, the niche sites matter more. And getting a mention there could be a lot easier than earning Reddit karma.
The only way to know is to check.
Find the most-cited sources for your prompts
The table above is a good starting point. But it's an average across every prompt our users track, and your top prompts may just as well be outliers.
As we mentioned above, you must always check for your specific prompts.
You can start by hand:
- Ask Gemini your 10 most important buyer questions.
- Write down which domains it cites.
- Repeat it a few times over a week, since answers shift from day to day.
- Look for the domains that keep coming back.
That works if your scale is small. But if you want to cover all your top prompts, spot trends, and react when sources change, it gets old much too fast.
That's what Surfer AI Search Analytics is for. Add the prompts you care about, and we'll show you exactly which domains get cited most often in the answers.
- Go to the Sources dashboard to see all the top domains cited for the topics you care about.

- Sort by LLM. Use the AI models filter to see Gemini only, or switch to ChatGPT, Perplexity, AI Mode, or AI Overviews (so you can see how different each model's favorite sources are).
- Group by domain. Open the Sources dashboard and toggle Group by domain to get a list like the one in this article, built from your own prompts.
- Build your outreach list. The Mentioned column shows whether each source already mentions your brand. The ones that don't are your new outreach list.
Don't be surprised if your top sources are sites you've never heard of. Like we said, sources vary from prompt to prompt. And it’s better to find out now than when your boss asks why a competitor keeps getting recommended.
